India aims to expand its economic and diplomatic influence in the region by announcing ambitious plans to develop a new trade route from India to Europe via the Middle East.<\/p>\n
According to Voice of America, this plan, which is called “India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor”, is supported by the United States and is considered as an alternative to the “Belt and Road” plan of China.<\/p>\n
Trade between India and the Arab world has seen steady growth and currently exceeds $240 billion per year. India supplies about 60% of its total crude oil imports from the Middle East.<\/p>\n
John Kalabers, a senior fellow at the Washington-based Middle East Institute, says the plan has strategic and economic value for India and moves India’s strategic competition with China into “new territory.”<\/p>\n
